Chiropractors use hands-on spinal manipulation and other alternative treatments. The theory is that proper alignment of the body's musculoskeletal structure, particularly the spine, will enable the body to heal itself without surgery or medication. Manipulation is used to restore mobility to joints restricted by tissue injury caused by a traumatic event, such as falling, or repetitive stress, such as sitting without proper back support.

Cupping therapy

Ever since Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps was spotted (no pun intended) at the 2016 Rio Olympics with cupping marks all over his back and shoulders, there has been a great deal of interest in this therapeutic procedure.

Cupping therapy is another highly effective technique of Traditional Chinese Medicine that is sometimes included in a treatment plan. With cupping therapy, a vacuum is created inside a glass ball or “cup” and the cup is then applied to the skin. This increases local blood circulation tremendously and stimulates the body’s healing response.

What Happens During a Chiropractic Adjustment?

A chiropractor uses hands or instruments to apply a controlled force to specific areas during a chiropractic adjustment. The goal is to use spinal manipulation to improve function throughout the body. An adjustment can be beneficial for addressing pain and injuries. Adjustments are commonly used to address the following:

  • Neck pain

  • Lower-back pain

  • Headaches

  • Stiffness

  • General aches and pains

  • Reduced mobility

  • Inflammation

Routine adjustments can also be assets for wellness even if you aren’t suffering from an acute injury or pain source. During an adjustment, a chiropractor typically places your body in specific positions that are designed to address specific pain sources. You may experience little “pops” or “cracks” as your chiropractor applies strategic, controlled pressure to your joints during an adjustment.

Tips for your chiropractic visit

  • Unless something unexpected happens, you should expect that your visit will include your first chiropractic adjustment. This means lying on a table, sometimes face up, sometimes face down, and often in a variety of other positions as well, including on your side.

01.

  • While your chiropractor is a health care expert, he isn’t a mind reader. Be prepared to tell the doctor everything you can about your pain. How it started, how long you have had it when it happens, what seems to make the pain worse or better, and what you have been taking to ease your pain if anything.

Don’t be shy or ashamed to tell the doctor the truth. Chances are pretty good that you won’t shock him, and they have heard similar stories before. You can’t get the full benefit of treatment if the chiropractor isn’t fully aware of your problem and your lifestyle.

02.

  • Some chiropractors like their patients to have a massage before they do adjustments. Others prefer the massage afterwards. This will depend on the chiropractor and your unique circumstances, but most people don’t expect a lovely, relaxing massage from their chiropractic visit. You will learn to love this aspect of your future visits and might find yourself returning just for massage after your other treatments have ended!

03.

  • Do chiropractors adjust on the first visit? Yes, they will.

Don’t let those videos you might have seen frighten you. Adjustments do not hurt and afterward, they feel so good, you might wonder why you waited so long.

If you hear any popping or cracking noises, don’t be concerned. Nothing is breaking or actually cracking into pieces. This is simply trapped air being released from between the joints or discs, similar to the noises you hear when opening a soda bottle.

  • Chances are that your chiropractor will make a treatment plan for you. Be certain that you understand and ask any questions before you leave. You should also make your next appointment before you go and make a note of it in your phone, so you won’t forget!
